Hi Everyone,

The best laid plans of mice and men..........

My family and I have a block of land out in the rural back blocks, we have had it for about 7 years and have worked really hard to build it up to be our haven or bolt hole, that place we will go when every thing turns to shit.

Building dams, Fruit trees, Veg gardens, livestock, solar, wood heating and cooking and food storage etc.

A few weeks ago the shed was broken into and they took the solar batteries (everything was off in the freezer and stank), the rifle and compound bows, 6 jerry cans (full ), lots of garden equipment, alcohol, and other bits and pieces.

BUT... my biggest concern is that this person now knows we have food stored there and that nobody is there through the week, so what do we do about that?

We already thought the place was pretty secure (chains, bars, locks etc) but I guess they had all the time in the world when nobody was there and your in the middle of nowhere. 3 other places were broken into the same time and other people had a lot more taken than us but it still pisses you off when you work so hard to get all this gear together and then some toad thinks he can just come and take it.

The police came and managed to get prints and some DNA but we haven't heard back from them.
so what to do....... spend money we don't have on solar video.....just don't know.

We are planning to move there middle of next year.

Any suggestions?

Sorry this happened to you Ally. I agree with everyone else's comments so far.
I've had serious thoughts about how best to prepare and 'stock up' so to speak. On the one hand, people can hoard vast food reserves and equipment, then hole themselves up when the proverbial storm hits; on the other, one can 'hope for the best' and tackle things as they come.

A while back I had the following thought: In a gold rush, who makes the most money; People digging for gold or the one selling shovels?
The trick, in post WW3 scenario is to do the equivalent of selling shovels. There'll be a lot of people doing whatever they can to get a bite to eat - so big stores of food are probably a bad idea and would eventually attract unwanted attention.

Ally, you seem to have the right idea in terms of getting equipment to work the land and grow your own food. I'd go one step further and research into what edible delights nature provides. You'd be surprised at just how much out there is edible - particularly of the plant and mushroom variety.

In an ideal situation, you could then 'teach' people how to live off what nature provides, and perhaps work a bit of their own land. They could then go and assist others, and so forth.

However, the situation is far from 'ideal', as there's way too many selfish types who'd rather rob, murder and steal. To put that into perspective, I was walking past a school on the way to campus this morning when I saw a class of children doing some sort of sport. I then heard the teacher giving one boy a telling off - the teacher's said, rather patronisingly, "Jamie, you are helping him again. I told you not to help him!"...

Needless to say, 'Jamie' continued helping his team-mate despite the teacher's efforts.
My thoughts went to that boy in the hope he'd continue to be the team player he obviously was, and not succumb to the selfish 'me-me-me sod everyone else' attitude the teacher was trying to indoctrinate him with.

I bring this up as Jamie was just one amongst twenty or so who had already been indoctrinated.
In a post WW3 world, what would Jamie and those twenty others evolve to. It also highlights some grass root problems with world (and particularly 'Western') society. Once the 'me-me-me's have robbed, stolen and murdered anyone who stands in their way, will any of them survive?

Also, the thought occurs, that although preparing for a variety of scenarios is a good idea, it might also be a good idea to have a few 'dummy runs' in the interim. Try living in the environment for a week or two at a time, and ask 'could I live here for a few months/year/years'... What would make it 'better'. Living in a nuclear bunker might help you survive a nuclear war, but what will you do whilst living in that bunker. Don't forget the creative/recreational pursuits too - even if you're spending most of the day working the land. You'll need them more than ever.

Sorry to hear this happened to you Ally. There are some nasty people out there. But I also believe that if things get very bad, there are good people who will help. I think of 9/11 and how the people in that situation went out of their way to help their fellow neighbors. So, it's good to be prepared (food, supplies, etc.) and to think positive so you can attract good people when things go bad. Sounds corny but it's true.

Some good ideas there and I will look into the organite Lilly, I haven't herd of it before so I'll do a bit of research. I do have a pyramid out there and I will ask Levi if it needs a tune up?

My husband has just looked into what you have suggested Josh, mobiles and internet a bit patchy out there but its maybe worth a try.

We would move out there now except the kids are still at school, one doing yr 11 the other yr 9.... a hard time to move them, maybe the end of this year, the kids are up for the move. Its just allot further to a school out there.
My husband has since done a bit of scatter hoarding around the place and so it has forced us to think a little differently ( not that we ever thought something like this couldn't happen, we have lived in country locations and have seen farms broken into all to often) and maybe there is a lesson to be learned here.

I think we will build a cellar of some kind like you suggest.

Esme please don't think we have put all out faith in this place, we chose it for height and distance above sea level, defensibility, fertility etc but we are resourceful and adaptable, if we don't make it there then such is life, if something happens we will deal with what comes our way. We keep stores here with us too, backpacks with survival equipment and could walk anywhere we need to go as this is what we are used to because it's the way we holiday. The kids know how to look after themselves, and are called dinosaurs by our friends because they are not into all the modern crap and hype. Yet all other kids love coming to stay with us.

I feel for everyone who has no where to go and think for allot of people that it's just plain unfair, I hope they at least have put some food away and wish them well.

After everything is said and done though who can prepare for something like what happened in Japan, Christchurch or the American tornadoes and my heart goes out to all those people.
I'm also a bit like Levi these days and I intend to look after me and mine first and foremost, I have made my plans ( worked hard and gone without to achieve them) and I have tried and will continue to help others as much as possible, but at the end of the day you could walk out the door tomorrow and be run over:0)

If ok, its doubtful the guy will get away with it. The Pyramids work in strange ways sometimes.
It could be wake up call as well to tighten security because the last thing you need when the real deal comes is a breach. We have been warned about desperate hungry people. They will kill for food so look on the bright side, nobody got hurt.

Don't know if you have internet access in a remote location, but you could install and IP/networked camera, they aren't that expensive, so that you can view/monitor the site from a remote location. Also record and store the videos offsite.

That way if the equipment is stolen you at least have the evidence to present.

WG:

Levi suggests you can also buy cheap "FAKE" Security cameras. They have a visible red light run by batteries.

They dont actually record anything but are convincing enough to make any intruder think twice.

A burglar usually wont take a chance on property with security cameras. He will break into another house without one.

In your case its worth investing in the real deal if you want to nail this guy.

Golden rule as Levi said. Never tell anyone you have a food supply or you will be relieved of it sooner than later.

That is just heartbreaking to hear. All that hard work and money down the drain. I would have steam coming out of my ears!

Well, the damage is done for now. What you need to do is protect it from further pillage. Perhaps a chat with Levi on using your pyramid to protect the area is in order. I would be purchasing some organite too and planting it everywhere (repels negative intent). I've got 3 kilos coming soon and will be putting the stuff everywhere in the house, gardens etc.

Bugger, I've lost the link. In another post there was a link where you buy it very reasonably in Oz, if you don't care to make it yourself. Also google 'organiteinfo'.

Good luck with it Ally. You and your family will be OK.

Hi Ally,

Dig an underground store facility much like the storm shelters that they have in the tornado zones of the USA. Make sure that only you know the entrance to this. More hard work I know but what has just happened to you is a foresight into how things will be if and when the going gets tough.

We have covered this before on the open blog but it was a long time back.

Once people get desperate they will do any thing to get hold of your provisions. Make sure that any thing that is essential to your survival is not on display to anyone.

The future is so unpredictable and Levi has covered most of the possible scenarios in the private blog. Have you thought of what you would do if your area of land flooded or became inaccessible?

Maybe a static store will not be available. Can you survive if you suddenly had to move to a different area?

I'm not trying to be pessimistic as there are also some amazing possibilities that could come about as a result of the next few years. Those that make it through will be the ones who are the most mentally agile and prepared to chop and change their plans as to what environment they find themselves in.

There are already many destroyed places on this planet mostly man made. Look at Japan, Iraq and Palestine. Here the people have nothing but there will to survive goes on despite the terrible suffering that they have to endure.

We are all of us thousands if not millions of years of inherited genes. All of those genes have come from survivors otherwise quite simply we would not be here. Generation after generation of women have suffered the pains of childbirth just so that we can exist and we have barely any knowledge of these amazing people who have survived so much for us.

The majority of people on the planet will not have the luxury of preparing due to lack of resources. Even here in the UK one of the richest countries in the world it has become almost impossible to afford anything other than day to day essential needs.

The worst case scenario if we even survive is that we will be in a world where people are hungry and desperate and it will be the survival of the fittest.

The best case scenario is that our vast brains and sleeping DNA will switch on and we will make an amazing leap forward. We will see that the survival of our fellow men is paramount to our own survival and will come together to rebuild and restructure an amazing future.
