Buying Gold + Silver

by Lily de Cuir
(Australia)

Hi Everyone,

I was going to contact Levi privately about this, but thought it might be on our collective minds.

How to go about buying gold and silver and holding it physically. Not on paper, in a fund, but holding it in your hand kinda stuff.

Now, I have a few questions:

1. How do you know you are buying the real stuff and not tungsten, or whatever else they can fool us with?

2. I've mentioned here before about how in the last depression, gold was confiscated...

3. And where can you buy it, the real stuff (see question 1.) I'm here in Oz and I wouldn't have a clue where to start.

Lloyd, you seem to be pretty cluey, can you give us any insight?

I am feeling that things are going to get pretty rough soon. I'm prepared as much as I can be. But this whole Gold/Silver thing has got me a bit perplexed.

I know Levi, for years you've been saying to buy and physically hold gold and silver, but I'm just not sure about it. Hence my questions above.

I'm not the smartest card in the deck when it comes to economics/investments. Just need some common-sense, down to earth answers.

Would appreciate any feedback from you all.

Cheers,
Lily

Thanks for the tips
by: Lily

Hi All,

Thanks everyone for your all tips and insight. Much appreciated. I now have a pretty good idea where to start, what to buy and what to avoid and feel a lot more confident in doing so.

I'm sure you have all helped others not just me.

Real gold
by: Anonymous

Hi REK,

Interesting that you bring this up. I know a number of Asian (both Oriental and Indian) people and none of them consider the gold sold in Australia to be real gold, because it's not 24K. Gold in Australia tends to be 9K for the run of the mill stuff and 18K for the "really good" stuff. But of course, goldbugs like me don't consider this to be gold - it needs to be 22K at least.

However, for Asians, nothing but 24K will do. Unfortunately it's almost impossible to find in Australia. I've asked these Asian friends of mine and all of them report that they don't know where you could get Asian 24K gold. Maybe there's a market there I could get into... :)

Gold
by: REK

The best advice I can give you is to find an Asian store that have a small jewelry store. It could be a little more expensive to buy from them but their gold are almost always 100 percent pure. That is where we buy our jewelry and that is where we buy our gold. If you are familiar with the Asian community or have some Asian friends, ask them where they buy their 24k gold. The ethnic to look for when buying 24k gold from are Cambodian, Vietnamese, Thai, Hmong, and Laos. Chinese jewelry are not as trustworthy and are too generic. I am Asian myself and when it comes to purity, we go to our local Asian jewelry shop.

Cash converters
by: Andrew

You can always stand out the front of cash converters and offer %10 more for what was offered to people hocking off their old jewellery.
As long as it wasn't stolen in the first place.

Places like cash converters buy for something like %10 of market price on things like jewellery, up the price 10 fold to rip of the community at a so called cheaper price. Sounds like a Government run business to me. Something to do with insurance.

Or check out his website where sometimes people pretty much give stuff away. It still comes down to afford ability or best offer, but you really can find a good bargain, also depends on how much time you have to shop around. We have sold and bought with the help of this site. Saved $$$ and made $$$ on things we needed or didnt need any longer. A picture also helps greatly when selling stuff.

Silver, Copper, Brass, & Knowledge
by: Anonymous

Hi Lily,

I don't like gold; there are numerous reasons, that when thought about can become self evident. Short of wanting a few coins, or nice shiny gold jewelry, I'd stay away from it.

Silver, Copper, Brass, Nickel, and other similar lower value commodities, I do recommend. Even in Oz you should be able to find older 'junk silver, or copper' bags; which consist of older used coins.

Each piece isn't valued as high, so the loss of a single coin won't effect you as bad. In the States, current issue Nickels still have enough decent metal in them to make them a current haven for people.

I know several people going into stores, or banks, and buying a 1000 bucks worth of Nickels. The idea holds water because it's a less valuable means of exchange; which means if the SHTF hits the fan, then you can have smaller values of coinage to barter for smaller items.

Also, I don't know about in Oz, but I do think Bullets are a better form of SHTF currency. Not only is their value in due to their inherent nature, but also they are made of somewhat valuable metals... Copper, Brass, and Lead.

Anyone who places their 'shot' correctly, can then harvest the lead, copper, or combination there of, and still have the brass.

Also, on that note, you should be able to go to a tire store, or any place that mounts, and balances them. Wheel weights are a lead alloy. They are one of the premiere combinations for people smelting lead for bullets, or other things.

Usually, they are beyond cheap, or even free! Yet, it's a commodity that will have real world value in a SHTF scenario.

Beyond that, education into self sustaining life styles are priceless. Investing in how to make beer, wine, food storage, et el. will give anyone the ability to be king, or queen of their own dominion forever.

Something I'm checking into right now, or I should say entranced with is Earth Bag building. With this technology, I can go anywhere, and erect a house. I'm thinking on Federal land, and then burying it so that it cannot be seen.... Again, this is an example of something better than a 'money sink'; as I'm investing in my knowledge.

Just food for thought

Peace,

Sancho:)

Gold and silver
by: Lloyd

Lily, I've written a treatise (!) on gold and silver, and decided it was too big to post here, so there is a separate blog on it, if you want to go there, called just "Gold and Silver". Hopefully, you will get through it without falling asleep and it will explain a few things for you.

Lloyd.

antique coins
by: ChrisH(UK)

Numismatists (coin collectors) would suggest buying old (that is, early and pre-20thCentury) gold and silver coins, although their individual gold and silver content isn't always known to the exact gram or partial ounce. This applies particularly to really old stuff like that from the English medieval period, when people used to clip bits off of gold "nobles" and "angels" and use the gold fragments as small change.

They do bear a purchase premium, however, because they are antique items as well as being gold. For example, Queen Victoria sovereigns are bullion-price plus a bit extra because they have an antique value as well.

Or you look for a reputable firm selling bullion coins and bars online; I've dealt with several in the UK but of course I dont know what's in Oz, where you are. How can we know what we buy is the real deal? I suppose we just have to pray, unless we take the stuff to be assayed; if we thought everything was just gold-painted tin we'd become paranoid about every purchase.

Although the old coins have a premium, if the price of gold shoots up then it will more than cover the premium you pay.

I always look on the BBC Business website to see what the gold price is for the day, before buying anything. And one has to also remember that gold is priced in US dollars, so you have to then see how your currency is performing against the dollar.

At the end of the day, the exercise is about getting your hands on gold and silver coins, so if the prices are reasonable then grab em.
Perhaps not much help, but do see what you have available on the Net, in Oz (unless they've blacklisted all the bullion sites).
Incidentally, I note that your PM Rudd has gone; is this a relief, or have you replaced him with someone worse?
