Clever Aussie Scam

by Lily de Cuir
(Australia)

I've just found out from a friend that Australian mobile numbers are going public next month (April 2010). There's been no advertising about this at all.

This means for Aussies, that your mobile phone number will be released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls. (And yes, of course they usually call when you've just sat down for dinner).

If you simply delete the message, you could find yourself being signed up for 'extra services', like chimes, music etc and YOU WILL BE CHARGED for these calls!

Aussies, you can go to the 'Do Not Register' site to prevent these calls to not only your mobile*, but your landline phone. It's quick and easy. Go here:

www.donotcall.gov.au

* Mobile phone = cellphone

But wait, there's more - what a neat trick for the government to create another database of everyone's mobile phone numbers. We are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Levi warned us about things like this. Big business is getting out of control. Forced Consumerism fits here.

Pay as you go!
by: Anonymous

I'd so recommend finding the pay as you go, or don't at all! Either find a phone that you pre purchase cards for, or don't keep any contract phone!

We are under their thumb when we continually sign up for what they present to us as options; with a pay as you go phone, it's easier to see what deceptions they are going to try.

From there, we can each stop the bullshit, by not paying. My point is get off the contracts, Get rid of the Contracts!!!

Web Guy:

Agreed. I have a pay as you go as does Levi. A bit more expensive but a lot of people seem to be switching to same. I'm cell phone generation. Levi hardly uses his and leaves it at hone a lot. he says he did fine before mobile phones came and he'd do fine without one now.

I'm a mobile dinosaur
by: Chris (UK)

Glad you posted it anyway Lily, scam or not. Businesses are finding all ways to infiltrate. I am one of the few UK dinosaurs who has refused to purchase a mobile phone, mainly because I have absolutely no need for one. I don't need anyone to find me when/if I'm away from home; I don't desperately need to speak to other people while I'm driving the car; and I'd prefer not to have my brains fried with microwave radiation.

However....despite avoiding all the mobile-mania and signing up for the UK equivalent of "don't call me and I won't call you" register, I do STILL get occasional nuisance calls from unintelligible foreign sales-people.....and the latest gag is to receive a call, you pick up the phone and then hear a recorded message, "would you like to know how you can save money on blah blah blah....."....to which I usually respond by shouting down the phone at the message and then hanging up.

We are all so geared up to rushing and answering every call these days.....I'm starting to try and develop the habit of non-panic....if it rings, let it...if someone badly wants to talk to me, they'll ring back. Must go now....the phone's ringing! :)

Web Guy:

I tried to get Levi to let me tape him when he gets an unsolicited sales call for you tube but he's refused. Don't think youtube would allow it anyway because you have never as much relentless abuse and scorn coming out of one mouth. 'Are you such a loser asshole that you can't do a mans job' sort of thing.

They must be in tears when they hang up on him and he doesn't bat an eyelid and carries on as if nothing happened. Funny to watch and listen to but effective because they have become less and less.

I've tried a bit myself and they do get get very touchy. 'I don't have to listen to this language' sort of thing. Typical call center mentality.

But if they call you uninvited and impede on your privacy then you every right to abuse them.

Solution! Don't call uninvited in the first place. Simple! If we all did that they would soon pack it in. How much abuse could you take everyday? I would last about a hour before jacking the job in. Abuse for a pittance pay isn't exactly a career or good for the mental health.

Tugging forelock.....with cap in hand
by: Lily

Sorry people, upon further research, looks like this 'mobile phone numbers going public' in Oz is a hoax. Well, that is what is on the net. Who knows what is truth or tale anymore....

The 'Do not call' register is real however - so Aussies please still use this if you don't want unsolicited calls.

That will be a lesson for me to research things properly before I go off half-cocked and write a blog post!

Cheers,
Lily

Web Guy:

They're just testing the water. Unsolicited calls are getting worse.

The British equivalent of banning calls is

The Telephone Preference Service - Link - Below

TPS Online

You can register free and report all unwanted calls. They will never bother you again. Many won't give the name of company when you ask so tell them they have been directed to the TPS and they hang up immediately and blacklist your number so you can't get them in trouble.

Otherwise see Levi's method above. He thinks it's more fun. He's one sick dude...

by: Madge from NSW OZ

Thanks Lily,
I have been wanting to sign up to this for ages. I work nights and find myself woken frequently with dud calls!
