climate change

by clarke
(uk)

I know everyone is getting tired of climate change issues and I agree we should take a lot more care of our planet and the way we dispose of our waste, but we have been bombarded recently by the ms media about climate change to create fear in the general public and concerns about our future, but to get to my point.

Can anyone tell me out there what happened to all the issues about the O zone layer that was pushed into the public eye about 10 years ago. Has the
Ozone layer increased or decreased. Its seems this topic has just been forgotten about in the media and I don't understand how one minute its about look how we are destroying the o zone layer to the next minute about climate change issues.
Also I remember about 30 years ago watching programs dealing with the threat of a new ice age on the way.

It's no wonder people don't take these issues seriously when the ms media and the scientists don't know themselves what is happening.
Perhaps someone could kindly shed light on this issue.

Ozone's Fine
by: Lloyd

Yes, I can tell you that the ozone layer has largely healed. There was a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica, and research found that the cause of such holes is ChloroFluoroCarbons (CFCs) used in air conditioning and other uses.

In my opinion it was never a really big deal, although it did cause hard UV levels to rise in Australia, so I guess the Southern Hemisphere was impacted that way. Ozone is created mostly by electrical discharge (the smell you get when equipment sparks) and the biggest source of electrical discharge is lightning, which mainly occurs over land.

The Northern Hemisphere has the most land, so it has the most ozone production. Ozone is naturally broken down by UV light from the Sun, and this happens everywhere so it's logical the ozone layer should be thicker in the north, thinner in the south. I think it was just another environmental scare that's gone away.

As for climate change, you should realise that climate always changes. Warming is a good thing, as it stimulates release of CO2 from the oceans which helps plants grow. At times in the distant past when the Earth was warm, CO2 levels were sometimes tens and even hundreds of times higher than they are now and the Earth was alive and verdant. Cooling is not a good thing, and that's what we have now, which is why they don't talk about "Global Warming" so much any more.

Cooling leads to ice ages, and we definitely should be very worried about that. Not about doing anything to stop it, because this is just natural climate change - we have to prepare for it, because it's happening as I write this in the Northern Hemisphere.

So yes, you should worry about climate change, at least enough to protect yourself from the cold. But don't worry about the ozone layer. There is no shortage of ozone!
