The magnetic field is derived from the spinning of the Earth's core. When it gets unstable prior to a flip or an "excursion" it loses strength and starts wandering, wobbling like a top running down. Eventually, it can disappear altogether and then reappear in the opposite direction. What it's doing right now is an excursion. That's a sign that a flip or at least a major upheaval is imminent. There is a lot of argument about stuff like this. There are those that say it takes thousands of years for the magnetic field to disappear from its current strength, but then there are others... They say that its current strength is less than 10% of its maximum and declining, and that in the past anytime it was this weak, the geological record shows it just suddenly disappeared, not suddenly as in a few thousand years or even a few hundred, but virtually overnight. We need to be very wary. Especially for those living in areas where the magnetic north pole is wandering to. Those northern and southern lights are high-energy charged particles from the Sun and they follow the magnetic field lines, entering the atmosphere where they join up with the poles. You don't want to be under them when they do that. Likewise you don't want to be on the surface when the magnetic field drops to zero...
